This summer, The Seaside Repertory Theatre puts the spotlight on kids By Wendy O. Dixon
The Seaside Repertory Theatre (Rep) entertains and inspires folks from all over the Emerald Coast with its engaging theatrical performances. Offering fresh perspectives into the human condition, educational programs that promote an early and life-long appreciation for the arts, and outreach initiatives that benefit the community, the Rep is the premier theater organization in Northwest Florida.
This summer, the Rep is entertaining kids with fun shows, movies, storytime and drama camp.
Kids will giggle with delight as “James and the Giant Peach,” the story of Roald Dahl’s classic tale, is faithfully told by James himself and the insect characters — Miss Spider, Old-Green-Grasshopper, Centipede, Ladybird and Earthworm.
The Rep is showing family funny movies for the little ones in the Central Square Cinema, featuring a different movie each week. “The Lorax,” “Madagascar 3,” “Hotel Transylvania” and “The Truman Show,” which was filmed in Seaside, will be shown every Friday night.
For those who want to be the entertainment and learn all about showbiz, the Rep will host a drama camp called Camp Showtime, says Lisa Connell, managing director for the Rep. “It teaches kids about improv, performance skills and live theater,” she adds. “It was so popular before, we decided to bring it back this summer.”
A play not to be missed this summer, “The Hound of the Baskervilles” stars Brook Stetler, Alan Daugherty and Kyle Walter. This Sherlock Holmes story gets a gloriously funny makeover. Sir Charles Baskerville is found dead on his estate, with a look of terror still etched on his face, and the paw prints of a gigantic hound beside his body. The great detective Sherlock Holmes is summoned to investigate the ancient curse of The Hound of the Baskervilles.
Expect a lot of laughs during the Awkward Oxen Improv Hour, an interactive and fast paced comedy show that’s fun for the whole family and groups of all ages.
“What’s so great about our kids shows? The energy and talent that our actors portray keep children captivated in the story that is being told,” Connell says. “Young or old, our shows are enjoyed by all.”
