Pulitzer Prize Echoes: Seaside’s Sundog Books Partners with Florida House

Pulitzer Prize Echoes: Seaside’s Sundog Books Partners with Florida House

There’s an undeniable magnetic pull to a Pulitzer Prize-winning author. Their words, like tendrils, reach into the depths of our souls, awakening the emotions we often suppress. Riding that literary wave, Seaside’s beloved bookstore, Sundog Books, is set to shine even brighter this Fall. In collaboration with Florida House on Capitol Hill, they are poised to launch a captivating chapter in Florida’s literary chronicle.

Jack Davis and his magnum opus, “The Gulf: The Making of an American Sea”, resonates with Florida House’s mission to connect, celebrate, and champion our state to the world through the arts, history, culture, and literature. Davis’ novel crafts a vibrant tapestry of the American South’s history, ecology, and cultural ethos. His narrative does more than draw readers to the water’s embrace; it underscores Seaside’s deep connection with its maritime past.

While Davis undoubtedly shines, the behind-the-scenes efforts of Sundog Books and Florida House deserve recognition. Their collaborative efforts are not merely a partnership—it’s a mission to spotlight Florida’s rich literary tradition. Florida House on Capitol Hill, Our State Embassy in Washington, D.C. which opened in 1973, stands as a symbol of Florida’s spirit. Their quarterly Book Club goes beyond being an event and truly celebrates our state’s literary prowess.

Sundog Books is where literary enchantment lives- a cornerstone of Seaside since 1986, it transcends the label of ‘bookstore’. Founded by Bob and Linda White, this former modest beach reading nook has transformed into a literary haven. Here, knowledgeable staff, backed by years of literary passion, guide readers through vast worlds crafted from words. Among its many accolades, it was recently heralded as Southern Living’s #1 Bookstore to Visit in Florida in 2023.

On September 7th, Florida House will host an in-person and virtual Book Club session with Davis, delving into “The Gulf”. The Instagram Live broadcast will stream from Sundog Books at 5:30pm EST/4:30pm CST. Literature enthusiasts and beach lovers alike, take note: mark your calendar, follow @sundogbooks and @FloridaHouseDC on Facebook and Instagram, and reserve your tickets for the event using this link.

In a time where digital bytes often overshadow, the union of Sundog Books and Florida House reminds us of the enduring charm of written tales. Whether you’re a sun-kissed Floridian, a seasonal guest drawn to our emerald waters, or a newcomer, this is your ticket to joining a thriving literary community and world-renowned author. Dive deep, engage, and revel in the stories that, generation after generation, pulse at the heart of our state. Because genuine narratives, infused with authenticity and passion, aren’t merely stories—they are lasting memories.

The Seaside School Half Marathon & 5K, presented by SEASIDE®, is back, launching its 22nd year of racing. Registration, presented by Visit South Walton, is now open for Race Weekend from February 16th through 18th, 2024, further establishing this event as a signature running event and paramount fundraiser in Northwest Florida. Every year, athletes from around the world converge in Seaside, Florida, assisting in funding The Seaside School, Inc., a pioneering and enduring public charter school in Walton County, Florida.

“We’ve witnessed tremendous growth and transformation over the years, not just in numbers, but in the quality of the educational experience we provide,” commented Teresa Horton, Executive Director of the Seaside School Foundation. “Each year, Race Weekend is a true testament to the collective passion and commitment of our community. 2024 promises an exhilarating experience for everyone!”

This year’s race will embrace a dynamic superhero theme. Participants and spectators alike are encouraged to immerse themselves in the spirit of the event, donning attire inspired by their favorite superheroes, and celebrating the strength and resilience that defines the Seaside community. There will also be first time exclusive VIP experiences for racers and spectators.

“Each registration for the Race Weekend directly fuels our mission based programming at The Seaside School, Inc. Whether it is enhancing educational experiences for our students through new technology, exploratory programming or gaining access to higher levels of our collegiate curriculum, every race participant plays a pivotal role in our students’ success,” said Dr. Tom Miller, the new Executive Director of The Seaside School, Inc. “Their financial support resonates throughout every classroom, enriching their lives and inspiring the next generation of leaders to live a life of personal growth and prosperity.”

“Seaside’s deep-rooted history with the Seaside School Half Marathon & 5K, now spanning 22 years, embodies our shared ethos of community, vitality, and a commitment to excellence,” said Micah Davis, President of Seaside Community Development Council (SCDC). “As Seaside continues to flourish, it’s rewarding to see parallel growth and achievement in The Seaside School, Inc., honoring the vision of my parents and our town founders Robert and Daryl Davis.”

Registration this year comes with delightful surprises, notably swag from The Seaside Style, this year’s swag sponsor. This gesture not only adds a touch of local flair but also emphasizes the community’s integral role in the race.

“It’s genuinely a mammoth effort, requiring the dedication of over 400 volunteers including students, teachers and parents from Seaside Neighborhood School and Seacoast Collegiate High School, to bring this weekend to life,” added Kim Mixson, Principal of the Seaside Neighborhood School at The Seaside School, Inc. “We’re immensely grateful for the community’s unwavering support.”

Twenty Years of Great Tunes

Central Square Records turned 20 years old this year! What a fun ride we’ve had so far. We owe so much to our friends and customers for their support over the years. The countless albums released over the last two decades, all of the live in-store performances, and the people and stories that have graced our front counter are special memories we will cherish forever.

This April, in addition to our 20th anniversary, we celebrated Record Store Day, a special Saturday that features the release of hundreds of exclusive vinyl releases from popular artists and bands. Special releases by Taylor Swift, the 1975, Jason Isbell and wife Amanda Shires (to name a few), had people lining up as early as 3 a.m.

Later that afternoon, Jason Isbell stopped by and played a short, live set in the back room, to the delight of his die-hard fans who waited most of the day to see him. It made for a most fitting anniversary present.
