“The Wife Upstairs” by Rachel Hawkins
Want an updated take on Jane Eyre with just a hint of Southern charm? This mystery takes place in Birmingham, Ala., and is chock full of drama and intrigue complete with a love triangle. If you’re looking for a similar Young Adult tale for a younger reader in your life, the author previously penned the extremely Southern-meets-science-fiction Rebel Belle series.
“Concrete Rose” by Angie Thomas
In one of the buzziest books of 2021, bestseller Angie Thomas writes about a young black man coming of age. While it’s technically Young Adult (it’s a prequel to “The Hate U Give,” which was made into a film starring Amandla Stenberg) it’s a poignant story that can be appreciated by all ages.
“The Four Winds” by Kristin Hannah
Expect to see The Four Winds all over the beach this spring. While this isn’t a light read, it is a deeply moving one. The novel takes place in Texas during the Great Depression and is already receiving rave reviews. The emotional novel is about a woman who must decide if she’s going to move to California in search of a new life or stay in the place she loves most.
