Have you been considering joining a run club but don’t feel like it’s quite your speed? Don’t feel like you’re missing out, because Seaside just started its very own walking club. The group gathers on Tuesdays at 7 a.m. at the Seaside Post Office.
There are a few different planned routes that are different lengths and intensities, so there’s something for everyone. The group departs the post office promptly at 7:05, so make sure you’re there. It’s open to members, guests and friends, making it an accessible fitness activity for everyone.
Many times the group walks just past Western Lake and back, but they’ve also walked along the pavilions to look at the water. They always consider the routes based on who’s participating. They already have regulars, including Modica Market’s Carmel Modica, who doesn’t miss a Tuesday. They’re always open to adding other times and dates, and they want to grow the club so people can enjoy coffee or breakfast post-walk for a social hour.
According to information from Harvard University’s T.H. Chan School of Public Health, “People may think that walking is not as effective as higher-impact workouts,” but “a large cohort study of runners and walkers found that after six years of follow-up, when expending an equal amount of energy, moderate-intensity offered similar benefits as higher-intensity running in reducing the risk of high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes.”
The study found that the faster the walking pace, the greater the risk reduction observed. So, grab your sneakers, and join the club.
New Club Director Ann Grelling Foster has been behind many of the exciting changes at Swim & Tennis and is always planning more. They’ve wrapped up beach volleyball for the season, which resumes in the spring, and have set up their corn hole boards throughout town some mornings and for special events. They’ve also been hosting special pickleball events and are working on group fitness instructor training, with a plan to launch water aerobics classes.
