Seaside Neighborhood School Mentorship Program Wraps Up Another Successful Season

By Bobby Parker

Seaside Neighborhood School (SNS) recently concluded its annual Mentorship Program, a four-week initiative designed to provide students in 5th through 8th grades with real-world insights and hands-on experiences from local professionals. Held throughout October and early November, the program welcomed a diverse lineup of community mentors who volunteered their time and expertise, offering students unique learning experiences in various fields.

The success of this program stems from the dedication of the school’s teachers, mentors, and local businesses who collaborated to create a dynamic educational opportunity for students. The mentorships not only provided valuable insights into different careers but also offered students practical skills and inspiration for their future paths.

5th Grade: Sea Turtles and Theater

The youngest participants in the program, SNS’s fifth graders had the chance to explore two exciting topics: marine conservation and theater. The Friends of South Walton Sea Turtles organization introduced students to the importance of protecting local wildlife, while The REP Theatre’s Brook Stetler inspired students with the art of performance. Over two weeks at each program, students learned about the ecosystems around them and the creativity behind theatrical arts.

6th Grade: A Range of Talents and Trades

Sixth graders enjoyed a wider variety of experiences, from culinary arts to pet care. Chef Simon Sullivan of Nigel’s Private Chef and Chef Fabrizio Flammini hosted “Chef in the Making,” introducing students to the fundamentals of cooking and the artistry of culinary presentation. David Phillips of Hurricanes contributed his expertise, as did the teams from Huck and Harlow’s and Dog Harmony, who provided an introduction to pet care and careers with animals. Photography sessions were hosted by local professionals Lauren Ashley, Marla Carter and Hannah Drew, who shared their passion for capturing the beauty of life through a lens.

Students also had the chance to try pickleball and create artistic projects with mentors Jessica Underwood and Melissa Davis from the Cultural Arts Alliance, all while discovering more about self-expression and teamwork.

7th Grade: Business, Crafts and Surfing

Seventh graders explored business, physical wellness, and creativity through various mentorship opportunities. Makenzie Burleigh guided students through yoga sessions, encouraging mindfulness and well-being. THE SEASIDE STYLE® Marketing Team provided a look into branding and business strategies, while Leslie Kilpatrick introduced Cricut crafts. Students also enjoyed learning surfing skills with Taylor Frap and diving into entrepreneurship with Let’s Say Graze and Rebecca Pinto Jewelry. Additionally, Preston Sink inspired students with the intricate creativity of Lego League.

8th Grade: Health Care, Hospitality, Beach Culture and Media

Eighth-grade students experienced a range of mentorships focused on healthcare, local business, and coastal culture. NWFSC’s Radiology Department, SCRUBS-Nursing Program, and Dr. Shawn Weaver offered insights into healthcare careers, while local restaurants and hospitality businesses introduced students to the world of food and tourism.

Cabana Man and RUNSUP Watercolor taught the essentials of paddle-boarding, while The BOTE Store provided an understanding of the beachside lifestyle. The Seaside Times Editor Wendy Dixon shared the ins-and-outs of the newspaper business, including editorial, advertisements, graphic design, printing and distribution.
