Ninth annual Halloweener Derby wins the heart of Seaside By Kevin Boyle

In a destination town, you become accustomed to guests scheduling vacations around holidays, as well as major events like our upcoming Seeing Red Wine Festival. But in Seaside, one of the events we have to put on the calendar right away so visitors can book their vacay is the annual Seaside Halloweener Derby.

Each year, the event continues to grow with more than 40 scary fast dachshunds vying for the title. The races are competitive and a real test of doggy endurance to make it to the finals. Back-to-back Champ, “Jager,” hung up his collar and retired from the circuit last year, so this year’s title is truly up for grabs.

Following the races, all breeds are invited to join in the costume contest. Canines and their humans coordinate and create elaborate getups every year. Creativity and originality are key, as well as being just plain cute. Guests with or without furry friends love this annual event. And proceeds benefit local nonprofit, H.E.A.R.T. Animal Rescue.

This year’s event will be held Saturday, Oct. 27. Check-in and registration will start at 9:30 a.m. with the first races kicking off at 10 a.m. Costume contest (open to all breeds) to follow the championship race.

Registration is now open. Visit SeasideHalloweenerDerby.com to sign up your four-legged friends today. More information is at Facebook.com/SeasideHalloweenerDerby.

All events are sponsored by the Seaside Merchants. More information is at Facebook.com/SeasideFlorida. Contact events director, Kevin Boyle, at kboyle@seasidefl.com.
