Seaside favorite Jeanette Andrews returns to the Seaside Repertory Theatre (The REP) for a third season beginning May 31. The performances for 2016 are a blend of Andrews’ classic pieces and new, innovative magic. From her evening and matinee performances to the Magic Academy for ages 5-14, this season will have everyone talking.
Nationally hailed as “an inspiration,” and “magic for the 21st century,” Andrews presents a thought-provoking take on the art of the impossible in her newest show, Synesthesia: Illusions for the Senses & the Mind. Her newest work explores the facets of sensory perception, blurring the five senses together with illusions that make for an extraordinary evening.
During her show, entire audiences collaborate to create the performance by making crucial decisions and possessing seemingly impossible knowledge. Composed of distinctive and elegant magic, the show explores ideas based on Andrews’ studies in psychology and art. Audiences can watch a member of the audience foresee the future, a wine glass melt with a simple touch and a white rose spin to life.
Performances are Tuesdays and Thursdays at 6 p.m., and Thursdays at 1 p.m. at The REP Theatre in Seaside from May 31 through Aug. 4. Performances run Thursdays and Saturdays at 7:30 p.m. August 11 through 27.
Andrews is considered one of the brightest, most innovative young artists in magic today. She utilizes “experiential illusionism,” combining illusions with interactive performance, art and immersive theater. Her work has been praised by PBS, the Chicago Tribune, NewCity and the Daily Herald. Andrews has toured the United States, and she recently played to a standing-room audience at the Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago. Andrews is an alumna of the artist-in-residence program, Escape to Create in Seaside, where she first brought her talents to the community. Andrews’ work is a genuinely new experience — an unforgettable evening that will leave you speechless and enchanted.
Budding magicians ages 5-14 are invited join Andrews on Fridays for an hour-long magic academy from June 9 to Aug. 5. Classes begin at 1 p.m. for kids ages 5 to 7 and 2 p.m. and kids ages 8 to 14. These workshops are an excellent introduction to magic for those new to the art, but also for kids with prior experience looking to build their repertoire. Kids learn not only how to perform the effects but also how to begin to craft routines that suit their style and personality. Effects taught in these classes are not your average magic kit finds, they are special pieces of magic, specifically chosen for their uniqueness to this class. Whether you attended class last year or it’s your first time, you’ll come away with great new knowledge and confidence in your magic.
