Sign up for a workshop at the Academic Village in Seaside By Diane Dorney
Beginning this winter and running through the spring, the Seaside Institute is hosting a diversified field of professionals to conduct workshops at the Academic Village. This year’s programs include plein air (a French term meaning “in the open air”) oil painting, creative writing, architectural photography and learning how to draw in five days using the right side of the brain. All classes will be based in the Assembly Hall but will draw inspiration from the landscape and town of Seaside as classes will move outdoors for much of the time.
Novelist John Dufresne is returning for the third time to the Academic Village Jan. 29-31 to conduct a three-day creative writing workshop. Students may enroll to work on an existing manuscript or to learn how to take those first steps to launching one. Dufresne is the author of five novels, and was a 2012-13 Guggenheim Fellow. He teaches in the MFA program at Florida International University in Miami.
Brian Bomeisler is making a third trip back to Seaside for his “Drawing on the Right Side of the Brain” workshop. Bomeisler has been teaching this five-day intensive drawing class, held March 27-31, for inexperienced artists worldwide for decades. He lives and works in New York City and has paintings in collections at The Museum of Contemporary Art, La Jolla, The Hyde Collection, New York, and corporate and private collections around the world.
Conducting her first workshop May 25-29 at the Academic Village is plein air oil artist Kathie Odom. Odom hails from Knoxville, Tenn., and has a long list of awards and honors for her work. Her four-day workshop is geared to intermediate and advanced-level artists and will kick off on Memorial Day. Odom is excited about the beautiful options available to plein air painters in Seaside.
Rounding out the winter and spring arts programs will be an architectural photography workshop led by Steven Brooke — his second course offering at the Academic Village. May 30-June 3, this internationally renowned photographer will lead a dynamic program that combines the history of architectural depiction and composition with an accessible approach to the technical demands of photographing architecture, landscape, and interiors.
